Common Questions
What is included in the hourly rate?
Direct time on your project — architecture, development, code review, and working communication. No markup on third-party tools, cloud services, or APIs. You pay those vendors directly.
How do project quotes work?
Every fixed-price quote requires a scoping conversation first. I do not send estimates for problems I have not understood. If requirements are unclear when we start, we begin hourly and define scope as we go — then convert to fixed-price once the problem is well-understood.
Is there a minimum engagement?
Hourly work has a 4-hour minimum per session. Project work depends on scope — most projects start at $5,000. Single-day training and advisory calls are available with no minimum beyond the session rate.
Do you work with early-stage startups or nonprofits?
Occasionally, depending on the problem and the fit. If budget is a genuine constraint, say so upfront — I will tell you honestly whether I can help and at what terms.
What does the Fractional CTO retainer actually include?
A defined number of committed hours per month, ongoing async availability for quick questions and reviews, attendance at key meetings, and priority response time. The specific scope is agreed on before the engagement starts.
